The Land Rover Defender is a long-running four-wheel-drive off-road utility vehicle series produced by British automaker Land Rover, which is now a subsidiary of Indian automaker Tata Motors. The Defender series was introduced in 1983 as the Land Rover 90 and 110, replacing the earlier Land Rover Series.
Production of the Defender began in 1983 and the vehicle has been in continuous production ever since, without any major design changes. In 1993, the Land Rover Discovery was introduced and the Defender was given a major facelift and redesign, which increased sales for the vehicle.
In 2016, Land Rover announced that the Defender would be discontinued after 33 years in production. Land Rover introduced the all-new Defender, a replacement for the Defender, in 2020. The new model is powered by a six-cylinder engine and features a suite of advanced driver assistance systems.
